Fire Extinguisher Service Houston: Inspections, Recharges, Hydro Tests and Free Quotes

Compare 15 fire extinguisher service companies in Houston for annual inspections, tags, recharges and hydro tests. See 2026 costs, Texas rules and free quotes.

For fire extinguisher service Houston businesses usually call a state-licensed extinguisher company for an annual inspection and tag. Plan on roughly $8–$25 per extinguisher plus a trip charge, with recharges, 6-year maintenance and hydrostatic tests billed per unit on top. A technician checks every unit, services or swaps anything that fails, and hangs a new Texas service tag.

The 15 companies below come from Repairior’s Houston directory and list fire extinguisher service. None of them paid to be listed. Some are small extinguisher shops that do little else. Others are full fire protection contractors that can also cover your alarm, sprinklers and exit lights on the same visit.

What Is Fire Extinguisher Service?

Fire extinguisher service is the inspection, maintenance, recharging and testing that keeps a portable extinguisher ready to work when someone pulls the pin. The tasks come from NFPA 10, the national standard that Texas fire codes point to.

The Texas Department of Insurance State Fire Marshal’s Office decides who is allowed to do that work for a business. In practice that means a registered extinguisher company and a licensed technician.

The four levels of service

  • Monthly inspection: a quick look by you or your staff. Confirm the unit is in its place and unblocked, the pin and tamper seal are intact, the gauge reads in the green, and the body is free of dents and rust. Initial the tag or a log sheet.
  • Annual maintenance: a licensed technician examines each unit closely, checks weight, gauge, hose and mounting, fixes small problems and attaches a new service tag.
  • 6-year maintenance: stored-pressure dry chemical units are emptied, checked inside and refilled. The clock runs from the manufacture date or the last hydro test.
  • Hydrostatic test: the cylinder is pressure tested to prove it will hold. Water, CO2 and wet chemical units are due every 5 years, dry chemical units every 12.

A recharge is separate from all of these. Any extinguisher that has been discharged, even for a second, needs a recharge or replacement. A partly used dry chemical unit can slowly leak down and be empty the next time you need it.

How Often Does a Fire Extinguisher Need to Be Serviced?

For most Houston businesses the short answer is: checked monthly, serviced by a licensed company every year, opened up every six years if it is stored-pressure dry chemical, and hydro tested on a 5- or 12-year cycle.

Extinguisher type Annual service Internal maintenance Hydrostatic test
ABC or BC dry chemical (stored pressure) Yes Every 6 years Every 12 years
CO2 Yes Done with the hydro test Every 5 years
Pressurized water Yes Done with the hydro test Every 5 years
Wet chemical (K-class) Yes Done with the hydro test Every 5 years

The Houston Fire Marshal’s Office and other local fire marshals look at these tags during routine fire inspections. An expired tag is one of the most common write-ups for small businesses, and one of the cheapest to clear. Confirm the schedule for your building with your fire marshal, since some occupancies have extra rules.

Fire Extinguisher Types and Classes

The letters on the label tell you which fires a unit is rated for. Getting the class right matters more than getting the biggest one.

  • Class A: ordinary combustibles such as paper, wood, cardboard and fabric.
  • Class B: flammable liquids and gases such as gasoline, oil, solvents and propane.
  • Class C: energized electrical equipment. ABC and BC dry chemical and CO2 units carry a C rating.
  • Class D: combustible metals like magnesium and titanium, found in some machine shops and plants.
  • Class K: cooking oils and fats in commercial kitchens.

Kitchen K-class extinguishers

Restaurants with deep fryers need a K-class wet chemical extinguisher near the cooking line in addition to the hood suppression system. It backs up the hood system. Staff should activate the hood system’s manual pull station first, then use the K unit if fire remains.

Cintas Fire Protection lists kitchen suppression service. For other companies, ask whether they handle hood systems and line the visit up with your hood cleaning.

Vehicles, trucks and boats

Commercial trucks, service vans and boats carry their own extinguisher rules. Federal motor carrier rules require extinguishers on most commercial motor vehicles, and the Coast Guard sets requirements for many recreational boats on Galveston Bay and Lake Conroe.

A fleet of 20 vans means 20 units riding in hot cabs all summer, so check gauges more often than once a month. HTX Fire lists commercial vehicle extinguisher service, and Addicks Fire & Safety mentions fleet owners in its profile.

Are Fire Extinguishers Required in Texas?

For most businesses, yes. Houston and most Texas cities adopt the International Fire Code, which calls for portable extinguishers in most commercial occupancies. Texas law also requires anyone who sells, installs, inspects or services extinguishers for others to be licensed through the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

  • Placement: the fire code sets a maximum walking distance to an extinguisher and a minimum rating based on the hazard. A licensed company or your fire marshal can tell you how many you need.
  • Licensing: the company holds a certificate of registration and each technician holds an individual license. Both numbers belong on the service tag.
  • Tags: Texas requires a state-approved service tag on each extinguisher after service, showing the company, technician and date.
  • Homes: Texas does not generally require extinguishers in single-family homes. One in the kitchen and one in the garage is still a good idea. Apartment complexes have their own fire code requirements.

Local amendments differ, so confirm what applies to your occupancy with the Houston Fire Marshal’s Office or your city or county fire marshal.

Can I Service My Own Fire Extinguishers?

You can and should do the monthly visual check yourself. Annual maintenance, recharging, 6-year maintenance and hydro tests are different. For a business in Texas they are done by a licensed technician, and a tag you fill out yourself will not satisfy an inspector.

Homeowners with a disposable extinguisher simply replace it once it has been used, the gauge leaves the green, or it reaches the end of the life printed on the label.

Do fire departments service fire extinguishers?

Generally no. Houston-area fire departments do not recharge or tag extinguishers for the public. Fire marshal inspectors check them and refer you to a licensed company. Some departments offer hands-on extinguisher training, which is worth asking about for your staff.

Fire Extinguisher Service Cost in Houston

Most companies price per extinguisher plus a trip charge. A shop with four units pays mostly for the trip. A warehouse with 80 units pays mostly per unit and should ask for a volume rate.

Service Typical Houston range (2026)
Annual inspection and tag $8–$25 per extinguisher
Trip or service charge $50–$125 per visit
Recharge, 5–10 lb ABC dry chemical $20–$60
Recharge, CO2 $35–$90
6-year maintenance, dry chemical $25–$60
Hydrostatic test, dry chemical $30–$70 plus recharge
Hydrostatic test, CO2 or K-class $40–$100 plus recharge
New 5 lb ABC extinguisher with bracket $50–$100
New 10 lb ABC extinguisher $80–$160
New K-class extinguisher (6 liter) $200–$400

These are typical ranges for planning, not quotes. Prices move with brand, quantity, travel distance and whether the visit is bundled with alarm or sprinkler inspections.

Recharge or replace?

A small 5 lb unit due for a hydro test can cost nearly as much to test and refill as to buy new. Replace a unit when the cylinder is dented or rusted, the threads are damaged, the valve is plastic or non-rechargeable, or it has been recalled. Larger units, CO2 and K-class extinguishers are usually worth servicing.

What Houston Does to Extinguishers

  • Humidity and salt air: sites in Pasadena, La Porte and the Bay Area see rust on cylinders, brackets and hose fittings sooner. A badly corroded cylinder gets condemned at inspection.
  • Heat: most extinguishers are rated to about 120°F. A truck cab in August goes past that, which is hard on seals and gauges.
  • Hurricanes and flooding: after a storm, check any unit that was underwater or knocked off the wall, and recharge any that were used during cleanup.
  • Kitchens and warehouses: forklifts knock units off walls and grease coats kitchen units. Both turn into failed items at the annual visit.

How to Choose a Fire Extinguisher Company in Houston

  • Ask for the company’s State Fire Marshal’s Office registration number and check it on the TDI website.
  • Ask whether the technician who shows up holds an individual extinguisher license.
  • Get per-unit, recharge and hydro test prices in writing, along with the trip charge.
  • Ask what happens to units that fail. Are they swapped on the spot, or taken to the shop with loaners left behind?
  • Ask for a written report listing every unit, its location and the work done.
  • If you also need alarm, sprinkler or kitchen suppression inspections, ask about doing them on one visit.
  • Check for contract terms or auto-renewal before you sign.

How to Get a Fast, Accurate Quote

  1. Count your extinguishers and list each by type and size, for example eight 5 lb ABC, one 10 lb CO2 and one K-class.
  2. Note the dates on the current tags and any unit that was used or shows a gauge out of the green.
  3. Add your address, the number of floors or buildings, and access limits like business hours or gate codes.
  4. Mention any fire marshal correction notice and its deadline.
  5. Send it once through Repairior’s free quote form and compare replies on per-unit price, trip charge and how soon they can come.
